ThePicture of Hamar Greenwood, 1940. Greenwood family established itself at Whitby in 1850 with the arrival of John Hamer Greenwood from Wales. John, who later became mayor of Whitby, married Charlotte Churchill Hubbard in 1865 at Pickering Township and the couple had ten children. Perhaps their most famous son, Thomas 'Hamar' Greenwood studied at Whitby and Toronto before returning to the UK to serve as a political figure in a variety of prominent positions, including Chief Secretary for Ireland from 1920 to 1922. Hamar entered the highly coveted peerage system in 1937 when he was given the title 1st Viscount Greenwood. Despite his illustrious political career in the UK, Hamar was deeply invnolved in the affiars of All Saints' Anglican Church in Whitby, he even arranged for the installation of the Greenwood Memorial window in honour of his parents.
