The Whitby Public Library now has Book Club sets available to make it easier for book clubs to find enough copies of a title for all participants.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Book Club in a Bag?
A book club bag contains 12 copies of a book, along with information on the author and some sample questions.

How are sets borrowed?
The set must be checked out on one library card, and the person checking out the set is responsible for all 12 copies of the book.

What are the rules for borrowing a set?
Each book club set may be borrowed for 6 weeks. All books must be returned in the bag and cannot be renewed.  A second set may only be borrowed once the first set has been returned.

Because another book club may be waiting for the set, it must be returned by the date set at the time of booking, no matter when the books are checked out. Books may be picked up at any library branch.

a book. Can sets be reserved in advance?
By consulting the Book Club in a Bag title list and the Availability Calendar, it is possible to determine which titles are available and when.

Call the library at 905 668-6531, extension 2024 to place a hold on a set. Reservations may be made up to twelve months in advance.

Where should books be returned, and what are the late charges?
Please return books to one of the Borrower Services Desks and not through a book drop. It is important that all 12 books be returned together in the cloth library bag. If a book club bag is returned late, fines will be charged for all 12 items.

If any book is lost, the replacement cost of that book will be charged. The person who checks out the Book Club in a Bag is responsible for the return of the bag and all of its contents and also for any lost items or overdue charges. We have numbered each book to allow the borrower to keep track of which member has it.
